This illustration was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast for their Dungeons and Dragons - Monster Manual Book 4, which is out this month.

I was quite pleased with my invention of a flying snake. A creature that although fantasy is hopefully based on believable reality. I took inspiration from the frill on a cobra's neck and extended it down the body.

I am usually given a description to illustrate but for this project they let the artists design the monsters and then wrote the text around them. We were just given a vague brief like evil plant or lizard creature. It was really cool to work like this. I created 9 monsters for this book. Hi Anne. Love these monster manual beasties, but it's driving me mad trying to recall the name for these types of interior illustrations, which back onto white space have no background or border as such. I think it begins with an 'M'. Might be French.
Anyone know?

Awesome concept! Although there is actually a species of snake that is capable of flying, or rather, gliding. It's called the flying snake and it glides from tree to tree by flatenning and widening its body to allow it to hover:)
