Artist's Comments

I am currently working artwork for a novel cover. This is the rough sketch. The art will wrap around to the back of the book, so the dragon rider will appear on the front and the rest of the scene, to the left, will go round the back of the book. I'll post the fnished art in my gallery when it's finished.

It's a cool subject and I hope to be able to convey a real sense of flying when I paint the dragons.

ooo very nice, I really like the perspective and the details on the dragons face. Will we be seeing this coloured? I hope so

OMG, its beautiful! Did you get to read the novel before you started on the picture?

I like wraparound covers =) and this one looks great as it stands. The detail's already fantastic, and i do get a real sense of flight, the dragons' varying wing-postures and pulled-up legs really give that impression, along with the flowing hair and cloak.

Were it me, though, i'd have the spear-thrower in a little more of an aggressive stance, with his arm cocked back a bit more, probably yelling something. It would look a bit more dynamic, like he was actually going to throw, where now it looks like if he launched, the spear would pretty much just drop. Something a bit more like [link] (thanks google image search =)) Maybe even have him leaning back into the reins, like he was about to pull himself through the throwing stroke.

And it also seems like the perspective is just a tiny bit fish-eyed, which i don't go for in a fantasy setting, but that could just be from the layout of the buildings in the background.

But i can't wait to see the finished work. What book's it for?

Thanks! No I haven't read the novel but I have a description from the author to work from.

Thanks.
You make a good point about the rider. He is actually supposed to be attacking the city. However the need to get both rider and city on the cover and having him flying towards the viewer, means he's swooping round for another flight and won't be hurling the javelin just yet. Thats the theory anyway ;) Thanks for the ref image. That's a cool photo.
It is for a novel called Dragon Dawn.

Great concept. I'm working on a novel cover myself, which will make the journey from a digital piece to a traditional painting, back to a digital manipulation.
Can't wait to see your finished version! :-)
